Fantastic on all fronts
This concert was amazing in every way imaginable. The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavillion, the venue itself, is fantastic. On the lawn (where I was), it's fun being, and everywhere is a good seat. The concert began with a 'rag doll' 'guitar hero' battle, which was... intriguing. This might have appealed to guitar hero enthusiasts. ZZ Top followed this and were excellent. They really energized the crowd and it was evident that they were pleased to be back home. They performed all of their iconic songs, including 'sharp dressed man', 'cheap sunglasses', and of course 'La Grange'. They even had a good blues jam. Unfortunately, there were no spinning or furry guitars, and they didn't make a grand entrance by limo. Oh well. Following a 45-minute pause, Subject: Matter took the stage. Although this may have seemed like a long wait, upon seeing the elaborate stage setup, I understood its necessity. It was a spectacular arrangement, complete with moving platforms adorned with lights. steve Tyler appeared with his usual confidence, paying no heed to the presence of younger audience members, but he did manage to entertain the crowd. The entire band put on an impressive show, with Joe Perry showcasing his talent for swiftly changing guitars in just 5 seconds. There was a different bassist performing, but he truly shined with his remarkable bass skills, leading into 'sweet emotion', possibly the highlight of the evening. The audience lit up lighters during 'dream on', while Tyler demonstrated his extraordinary vocal range, screaming at a jaw-dropping pitch only he could achieve. After performing all the classics like 'janie's got a gun', 'love in an elevator', the original 'rag doll', 'livin' on the edge', and debuting a new, untitled song on the spot as 'the combination' (which was quite impressive), they closed with 'walk this way', really getting into it and clearly enjoying themselves. Following the complete setlist, they returned for an encore, which unfortunately I missed, but I caught a glimpse of it on the way to the car, and the audience seemed to adore it. The entire event was a fantastic experience for fans of ZZ Top, Subject: Matter (and guitar hero) alike, and I'm confident that all attendees thoroughly enjoyed the show.
